spring's in the air - lente in zicht ?

Sorry !...

Onderweg naar het werk eergisteren ben ik wel even gestopt om dit nieuwe leven in de berm even te bewonderen.

new life makes me happy...

I've been extremely busy with work this week and to be honest I've also enjoyed the exceptionally warm weather (15-20 ° C) so no time to play. Sorry....

On my way to work the day before yesterday, I just had to stop the car for a minute to enjoy this new life on the soft shoulder of the road.

ideas for 'flipkonijn'

Because I liked Ann-Eline's project (from the previous blog post) so much, I wanted to participate as well and from a selection I chose the poem "flipkonijn". A word which is very difficult to translate into English, so maybe you can help !

A 'konijn' in Dutch is a rabbit and a 'flipkonijn' is a person who (just like a rabbit) can lose it because of stress or can go berserk. Would there be a word in English with this meaning ? Please let me know !!

Of course I can't tell you much about it yet, since the exposition will only take place at the end of the year (October-November probably). I can, however, show you my first ,careful 'steps ' into this new project. The end result will be a surprise, even to myself !

A couple of weeks ago I saw a coverage on the work of Ann-Eline Van Rompuy on our local tv station ROB. She creates the most amazing texts and poetry with the help of words cut out of newspapers. you can see what she does and how she does it here .

Since I'm still fiddling with my pencil lettering, it was nice to  to use one of her texts in this exercise.

I tried to give the letters some more 'body'

in English it is something like this: We take the scissors and cut this year apart and glue a new start for each other (www.lettergekletter.be)

20 years later...

original work, poem by Toon Hermans (translation at the end of this post)

I made the work above 20 years ago.Can you believe that !!! Back then my parents asked me to do this for their neighbour and friend, Paul. It had even slipped my mind I had ever made this. At that time I'd only been practising calligraphy for  a few years by the looks of it.

After my dad passed away last month, the same neighbour (now 83) contacted me  and said that part of the text was disappearing. It had faded because of the sunlight. Could this work be restored, he asked (since he seemed to be very attached to it) Well no, restoration isn't possible, but a remake is !

So, that's what I did for him...
remake 20 years later... maybe not as contemporary as you're used to, but that's the way he wanted it to be,so... de versie van 20 jaar later: misschien niet in de stijl die je van me gewend bent, maar dit vonden ze mooi, dus...

speedball pen and sepia gouache

I can only hope that my skills have improved after 20 years- ik hoop dat mijn schrijfstijl toch wat beter geworden is na 20 jaar...

klaar en terug in de kader die ze me gaven - finished piece, back in the frame that was given to me-18-24cm

Toon Hermans (1916-2000) was a Dutch comedian, singer and writer

Translation of the text (sorry, no rhyme in English, only in dutch):

'You do need someone

calm and sincere

who when the chips are down

prays and fights for you.

Only when you've found someone

who can smile and weep together with you,

only then you can say:

I have a true friend.'

Have a nice Sunday everyone !!!!

triple cube birthday card

It was a good friend's  and I was looking for a special fold card, which I found on the SCS site and originally looked like this:

Since I always have the tendency to use letters in my projects, I replaced the flower paper with white letters on a black background.

Dit is mijn versie geworden:

This is my version:

pencil exercise 'bubbles'

I've been playing some more with my pencil 'cursives'. I 've come across the text a lot in the first couple of days of 2021. In English it means:

'May Corona become a beer again and Ranst a village. And may we only find bubbles in our glasses from now on.'

edit: Marc Van Ranst = not only the name of a village in Belgium but also the name of a famous pandemologist.

bubble: people in your family unit you can have close(r) contact with

I started with the first part of the text and then remembered an old stamp I could use here

I wanted to create this 'bubble-effect', but it didn't work out the way I wanted...

At last I tried to roughly colour a few of these 'bubbles', only to find that I didn't like it as much any more. Well, you can't always "win", right ?

Nog een fijne zondag !

Have a nice Sunday !

disclose-unveil-unwrap

The theme for December's online class was 'disclose-unveil-unwrap'. We could work it out to our liking( as if that makes it any easier !)I went for this black and white 'packaging' ('dark and light') and a text I found on the Ingspire-website.

Met daarin een doosje 'verstopt'...

In it a small box can be found...

And in the box the full quote "The ensemble of dark and light unveils the beauty of life" (Ingspire)

En ook deze week nog nieuwjaarskaartjes binnengekregen. Fijn !

And also this week I've received a few more NY cards. Nice !
