black birthday card

Op de laatste dag van het jaar , is het weer de verjaardag van M.
Ik stuurde haar deze:

Birthday card for M, who has her birthday on the last day of the year.

This is how I made it:

begonnen met een gewoon zwart papier (A4)- started out with a piece of black paper

wat strepen toegevoegd met plat penseel en blauwe 'metaalverf'- added some stripes with a brush and blue metallic gouache

dan de tekst toegevoegd met plat penseel in kapitalen- then added my text in brush capitals

dan zo gevouwen en gesneden- folded and cut it like this

Bij deze wil ik ook nog eens iedereen bedanken die dit jaar regelmatig een bezoekje bracht aan deze blog.
En uiteraard ook aan allen: veel feestplezier van oud naar nieuw !

Deze dagen van het jaar zijn ideaal om nog wat te oefenen met het plat penseel; humanistisch cursief dit keer.
These days of the year are ideal to practice and experiment with the flat brush; italic script this time.

eerst wat opwarmen... - some warming up first

En dan iets 'cirkel-achtigs' proberen op zwart papier. Geschreven met gouache allemaal .
And then I tried to do some kind of circle-movement on black paper, all written with gouache and this flat brush.

old and new - oud en nieuw

'Oud en nieuw' is uiteraard een verwijzing naar de tijd van het jaar, maar komt ook voor in de tekst én refereert ook nog eens naar de handschriften zélf.
Ik probeerde namelijk letterlijk een combinatie te maken van een heel oud handschrift ( het oker tekstgedeelte werd geschreven in het foundational lettertype uit de 10 de eeuw) met het veel modernere gebruik van pipet en rulingpen (in het bruin).

'Old and new' is of course a reference to this period of the year, but is also there in the text itself and I tried to accomplish the old and the new, by combining a very old (10th century) English foundational hand (the ochre part) with a more modern use of ruling pen and pipette. (the brown parts)

Aangezien het papier (Zerkall 250gr) moeilijk beschrijfbaar is, gebruikte ik de scan van deze bladen om de vierkantjes uit te knippen.
The Zerkall paper is difficult to write on. That's why I used a scan of this page to cut squares from.

Met gouache lukt het soms (niet altijd dus) om te schrijven op dit papier. Deze gouache was grijs (een overschotje), waar ik nog geel en gebrande omber aan toevoegde, tot ik deze okerachtige kleur verkreeg.
It sometimes works to write with gouache on this paper. This gouache was a leftover . To the grey which was still in the jar, I added a bit of yellow and burnt umber, until I got this kind of ochre colour.

Ik werkte dan de kaart nog af met een randje tekst in kleine kapitaaltjes , een vierkantje (voor het grafische element) en het woord 'zon'. Het woord 'zon' werd geschreven met deze Brody Neuenschwander-ruling pen en sepia gouache . De sepia gouache gebruikte ik ook voor de tekst aan de binnenkant.
PS De tekst is van mezelf.

I finished the card with a frame of small capitals, a square of coloured paper for the graphic element and the word 'sun'. I wrote the word with this (Brody Neuenschwander) ruling pen and sepia gouache.

more canvas collages

Het maken van collages beviel me wel ,dus maakte ik ook nog deze :
I started to like making these canvas collages, so I made these:

voor R,waarvan ik heel wat tijdschriften kreeg, maakte ik deze 'living 29'. Hij is organisator van rock-en bluesoptredens. An amount of magazines were given to me by R, organiser of rock and blues music in our village.This one is for him of course

 Een collega beviel zopas van een dochtertje, Renée. Daarom tussendoor nog dit geboortekaartje.
Voor het kleerhangertje gebruikte ik een paperclip.

A colleague has just given birth to a baby girl, Renée, so I made her this card.
I used a paperclip for the clothes hanger.

 Soms wil een mens eens even buiten zijn 'comfort zone' gaan en eens wat 'experimenteren'..
Na het zien van het filmpje in de link (helemaal onderaan deze post),wilde ik wel eens wat uitproberen met de NG tijdschriften, die ik na een oproep op FB kreeg van mensen.

You've got to get out of your comfort zone from time to time, so that's what I did...
I saw the film in the link (below this post) and started experimenting with the NG magazines people gave me.

De techniek ging aanvankelijk niet zo goed als op het filmpje te zien was, maar bij een aantal bladzijden lukte het wél.
 Nadien ben ik het canvas dan gaan bewerken met stukjes van deze bladzijden en acrylverf, stempels enz. Afgewerkt met een woord met plat penseel.

At first the technique didn't work out so well, but I succeeded with a few pages.
After this I started applying pieces of these pages onto the canvas, with some acrylic paint, stamps etc....Finished it off with pencil and one word written with gouache and flat brush.

Had nog een kaart nodig voor een verjaardag én moest nog oefenen voor de plat-penseel-lessen. 2 vliegen in één klap,dus..
De sluiting is een knop met een simpel bruin stukje garen.

I needed a birthday card and had to practice for my flat-brush-class, so I combined these two...
The closure is a simple button and a piece of brown thread.

Dat je nooit papier mag weggooien, bewijst deze kaart weer .

Het papier hieronder op de foto gebruikt om stukjes papier te scheuren en zo een moderne boom te creëren.

This card shows again, that you may never throw paper away.

I used the paper in the picture to tear up into 'Xmas branches '
