Begin augustus mocht ik weer op zomerstage van Scriptores, dit keer onder de deskundige begeleiding van de Argentijnse Marina Soria.
Uitgangspunt van de hele stage was deze uitspraak van Lao Tzu, tao Te Ching, XI:
"Being and not being engender each other.
We mold clay to make pottery,
but is in in the empty space where the utility of the jug resides,
therefore, we should take equally advantage of what it is,
just as we recognize the usefulness of what it is not"
This quote was the starting point of the summer course I took last August with the Argentinian Marina Soria.Or in other words: in our western world we don't pay enough attention to the empty space; we see the object, but not the space surrounding it.
So it was not a course about letters this time. We only focused on the space around the letters. Fascinating, isn't it ?
In onze westerse wereld hebben we eigenlijk enkel aandacht voor het 'object' en nauwelijks aandacht voor de ruimte er rond. Geen stage over lettertjes dus, maar de focus lag op wat er te zien is naast en rondom de letters. Een unieke invalshoek !
Ter verduidelijking: veelal kunnen wij westerlingen dit NIET lezen:
An example, maybe; most western people have got issues reading this, because we're not used to take the empty space into account...
maar als je naar de 'empty spaces' kijkt, zie je't misschien wél?
En anders zal dit misschien helpen...

'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' is wat we noemen een pangram, een zin vaak gebruikt in de kalligrafie omdat alle letters van het alfabet er in voorkomen.
Maar wist je dat het ook écht bestaat ? Kijk maar eens naar het filmpje ....
