A number of weeks after the summer course with Marina Soria, it started to 'itch' again, so I wanted to make another book.
The focus is again on the empty space,so I coloured different empty spaces every time, with black and deep yellow gouache.

volledig uitgevouwen - the book when fully folded out

papier: Velin d'Arches

For the fun of it, I also made this mini-version, which I intend to use as a birthday card:

The empty space, womb of shape (by Marina Soria)

"Being and not being engender each other.
We mold clay to make pottery,
but is in in the empty space where the utility of the jug resides,
therefore, we should take equally advantage of what it is,
just as we recognize the usefulness of what it is not"

This quote was the starting point of the summer course I took last August with the Argentinian Marina Soria.Or in other words: in our western world we don't pay enough attention to the empty space; we see the object, but not the space surrounding it.
So it was not a course about letters this time. We only focused on the space around the letters. Fascinating, isn't it ?

An example, maybe; most western people have got issues reading this, because we're not used to take the empty space into account...

This might be helpful....

inderdaad mijn naam - yes, indeed she wrote my name here

En als je van dit:
And if you can go from this:

tot dit kan komen:
 to something like this:

it can open a lot of new perspectives and ideas !

Nog een paar andere oefeningen:
A few other exercises I did:

Marina's own work (with her permission to show the picture)
En mijn 'eindwerk':
This was my final project:

een 'grote' dame - a great and warm lady, Marina (on the right)

Linda Truyers.
Hier een voorbeeldje van een oefening:

In the meantime I started a new calligraphy course coached by Linda Truyers.
Here's an example of an exercise..

'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' is a so-called pangram, a sentence in which all letters of the alphabet occur.
But did you know that it really exists ? Have a look at the you tube clip.....

summer course with Elisabeth Couloignier : part 2

2 posts ago I showed you a work I made in the summer course with Elisabeth, but I made more. Yes, it was a very 'productive' course. I still need to write on some of them. Not all, because some are already nice as they are. I applied the "matière enduit" technique Elisabeth has taught us, so lots of layers of pigments, inks , paints and binder.

met een extra laagje rijstpapier ertussen - here I added an extra layer of rice paper

40-60 cm

In the meantime I wrote a text on the work in picture nr 5 . I didn't want the text to be too 'strong' so that the background wouldn't get 'lost' entirely.
Which other ones definitely need text, you think ? Let me know !

matter, composition and calligraphy on wood- summer course with Elisabeth Couloigner

I had barely finished the first summer course when it was already time to start packing for the second.
In Turnhout this time and organised by Scriptores.

The 2018 scriptores summer course was one that won't be forgotten very easily. Not only because it was such a broiling week, but also -and especially- because of the talent and captivating personality of our teacher; Elisabeth Couloigner.

On Sunday she discloses the week programme and makes it clear that the upcoming week is not about competition. Each of us will be able to come to a nice result, regardless of his/her level. It must be a personal search and whatever we do, it will be nice. Such a relief !

She starts with explaining the different techniques, that we can try on our zillion wood panels we had to bring. "peinture" in French. She also teaches us how we can use and integrate acrylic binders, matte medium , pigments , rice paper and composition rules in our work.

On Thursday we learn even more about composition and it's time for our own 'exploration'. We can now apply what we've learned. Those who want can also write some calligraphy on their panels, although some of these panels already looked fab without any text, if you ask me.

In other words; the 2018 summer course was a big success, cause the  always ready-to-laugh Frenchwoman knew how to guide and inspire us like nobody's business.
This is what a typical first layer would  like;

After the use of pigments, matte medium and binder, it started to look like this:

I turned it and added a few more layers of texture and text:

Hier nog een paar details:

A few details:

This is just one of the many panels I created. In September I'll show you some more...

harmony and contrast: end

And finally a report of days 3 and 4 of the summer course in Hoepertingen.

eerst inoefenen...- practise first...

en dan de compositie... - and the the composition

detail

And we also wrote a different kind of cursive for which I made this collage. It still needs text...

And in the meantime I've already left for my second workshop of this summer, given by Elisabeth Couloignier. I hope to show you an impression of this one too. Later.
